Renowned DJ Ash Walker releases cosmic “underwater” jazz full-length, ‘Aquamarine’
London-based deejay and producer Ash Walker takes listeners on a cosmic deep sea jazz voyage on his third full-length album, Aquamarine.
Walker has made his mark over the past few years as a remixer, a DJ (opening for The Specials), and with his original groove-oriented releases like 2016’s Echo Chamber and 2015’s Augmented 7th’s. On this album, which is his debut on the Late Night Tales sister label Night Time Stories (Khruangbin, Leifur James), Walker takes his one-man cosmic dub jazz sound underwater, creating a brilliant conceptual recording over eleven solid tracks. Taking his influence from older King Tubby LPs, Walker engineered the album with a true multi-layered analog vibe that presents the feeling that this was recorded by an actual multi-person group, which is actually realized when the music is performed at live shows by the Ash Walker Experience.
This remarkable new record features special guest vocalist and fellow Londoner Laville, who provides soulful vocals on some of the album’s best tracks, including the opener “Under The Sun” and the single “Finishing Touch.” The recording also features one of the UK’s most rising jazz stars in trumpeter and flugelhorn player Yazz Ahmed on the track “Come With Us.”
Overall, Ash Walker has successfully put together a great new forward-thinking and mesmerizing album, one that feels like your listening to soulful cosmic grooves at the bottom of the ocean … and you are absolutely happy to be there.
