Renowned bassist Pino Palladino & multi-instrumentalist Blake Mills release innovative new album ‘Notes With Attachments’
Renowned bassist Pino Palladino, who helped create the rhythm-section sound on D’Angelo’s neo-soul classic albums Voodoo and Black Messiah, as well as performing over the years with Erykah Badu, Nine Inch Nails, Paul Simon, Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock and numerous others, teams up with prolific multi-instrumentalist and producer Blake Mills to release an amazing and highly innovative new album, titled Notes With Attachments.
Put out by Impulse! sub-label New Deal Recordings, this brilliant new eight track instrumental recording is based off of repeating chord changes inspired by jazz, funk, West African, and Cuban rooted music featuring interwoven bass and guitar lines, syncopated percussion rhythms, horn melodies, and electronic tones. Through the recording there is a nice blend of both acoustic and electric instrumentation that helps provided interesting layers and dimensions.
Originally the album was going to be a solo venture for Palladino, however it quickly evolved into a fully collaborative work shortly after Mills was asked, early on in the process, to play on some of the material and the two really connected on the direction of the music.
The session also features an absolute superb cast of musicians including drummer Chris “Daddy” Dave (D’Angelo, Anderson .Paak, Robert Glasper Experiment), acclaimed saxophonists Sam Gendel, Marcus Strickland, and Jacques Schwartz-Bart, and keyboardist Larry Goldings (of organ trio Peter Bernstein, Larry Goldings and Bill Stewart).
Through this collaborative release, Pino Palladino and Blake Milles have produced one of the most uniquely sounding and innovative albums of the year. This is one of those truly fascinating recordings that you might just find yourself listening to again and again on repeat. Highly recommended!
