Mr Bongo celebrates 30 years with their third ‘Record Club’ compilation
The UK-based Mr Bongo label and record shop celebrates 30 incredible years with the release of their third Record Club compilation in May.
Established in 1989 as a small record shop underneath Daddy Kool’s Reggae Store on Berwick Street in London, Mr Bongo got their start by being the first storefront to release independent hip-hop records outside of the United States. The shop also became a major hot spot for collectable and rare Latin and Brazilian vinyl. After numerous relocations over the years, Mr Bongo is now located in Brighton, and continues to be one of the most respected labels and vendors worldwide.
The label’s highly-acclaimed Record Club series, established a few years ago in 2016, features a wide variety of obscure selections, favorites, and recent finds that have been featured on Mr Bongo’s radio shows, mixes, and DJ sets. These compilations often feature tracks that are unknown to even the deepest vinyl collectors. Much like all the reissues they’ve released over the years, the music spans from Afro-funk, highlife, Latin, and Brazilian grooves, to rare soul, funk, and disco. The first two volumes were absolutely brilliant, and the third edition looks to be just as good. Early previews of the record (listen below) definitely suggest that this might quite possibly be the best compilation of the year.
Officially released on May 31st, this latest Record Club compilation seems like the perfect way to help celebrate 30 remarkable years as a vinyl culture leader.
