Mono Jazz reissues 1972 rare groove-oriented Italian jazz classic by Gino Marinacci
Over the last few years, Right Tempo’s sub-label Mono Jazz has been putting out a number of superb releases spanning from new albums, the more recent compilation The Congregation, and some worthy reissues, including the recently issued highly obscure 1972 full-length Atom Flower’s by Italian flautist, saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Gino Marinacci.
This album was recorded in legendary Italian composer Piero Umiliani’s Sound Work Shop studio with a similar line up to the one of his iconic 1973 To-Day’s Sound recording. Featuring 8-tracks, this incredible full-length brilliantly blends together funky psychedelic jazz grooves, Italian Library music influences, cinematic arrangements, Latin rhythms and cool West Coast vibes that arguably give the session a bit of a late 60s mod jazz feel. The session includes a wide array of flutes, saxophones and other horn instrumentation, organ and keys, layered percussion and more.
With original copies rising in price and very hard to even come by, it’s great to see a well-crafted reissue of this Italian jazz classic.
