Melbourne’s Black Jesus Experience team up with Ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke on new album
The rightfully proclaimed “Godfather of Ethio-jazz,” Mulatu Astatke teams up again with the Melbourne-based collective Black Jesus Experience on a brilliant new Agogo Records released album, titled To Know Without Knowing.
This nine-track recording perfectly blends together Astatke’s pioneering Ethio-jazz sound with Black Jesus Experiences’ jazz and funk grooves, combined with hip-hop verses and soulful vocals. The album is a mix between new compositions and re-arrangements of traditional Ethiopian instrumental music, as well as an incredible new version of Astatke’s 1972 classic “Mulatu”.
Recorded between Addis Ababa and Melbourne, To Know Without Knowing is the second collaboration between the iconic legend and the eight-piece collective, who together self-released the full-length album Cradle With Humanity in 2016.
Overall, this a great multi-generational collaboration and fresh modern day take on the music Mulatu Astatke helped bring to the world.
Highly recommended!
