Mark de Clive-Lowe, Shigeto & Melanie Charles arrive at Hotel San Claudio
Three of today’s most forward-thinking artists, in Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist/producer Mark de Clive-Lowe, Detroit drummer/producer Shigeto, and Brooklyn/Haitian singer, flautist and sample chopper Melanie Charles have teamed up under an exciting new project titled Hotel San Claudio, which was appropriately named after the Italian countryside stay in which the trio first came together in preparation for performing as a trio at the Fat Fat Fat Festival.
The group’s brilliant 9-track debut album, which is released on Friday, March 24th on Soul Bank Music, fuses together broken beat and Dilla-esque grooves, spiritual soul-jazz, cosmic electronic textures, and some soulful vocals and flute work from Charles. Building off of last year’s incredible MdCL led live album Freedom, the session also pays tribute to the late great Pharoah Sanders, with two superb renditions of his classic “The Creator Has a Master Plan” and a new take on the iconic “Love Is Everywhere.”
With each member of this impressive collaboration infusing their own influences and sound to the collective whole, the trio has produced a superb and boundary-pushing debut. Highly recommended!
