Los Angeles-based Jimetta Rose & The Voices of Creation release spiritually-charged uplifting debut
For what seems like at least a year now, music from Los Angeles-based community choir The Voices of Creation, led by vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and producer Jimetta Rose has seen some strong rotation from the likes of some notable DJs and radio broadcasters including Kev Beadle, Colin Curtis, Gilles Peterson, David Paterson and others. The group’s highly-anticipated debut album, titled How Good It Is has recently been released on London’s Day Dreamer label (subsidiary to Night Dreamer Records).
The Voices of Creation is made up of a multigenerational group of mainly non-professional singers backed by some of LA’s best musicians, with the main intention of healing themselves and others. Their incredibly uplifting six-track recording brilliantly blends together elements of spiritual jazz, soul, funk and gospel and features a nice mix of originals and covers, including new renditions of Sons and Daughters of Lite’s deep jazz gem “Let The Sunshine In”, Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s choral jazz classic “Spirits Up Above” and a fantastic reworking of Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop”.
Produced by by Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Seu Jorge) and his wife Samantha Caldato, Jimetta describes the overall sound as “New black classical music.” She further explains, “It’s all the hodgepodge of being an African American but also with creativity and vision for the future. It has a taste of what is to come and what we can do. What we have gone through and who we are now.”
Overall, an impressive and diverse spiritually-charged recording centered around love, joy, and healing that will lift your spirits, while making you move at the same time. Highly recommended!
