London’s Maisha release new 16-minute spiritual jazz single “Open The Gates”
In coordination with September 26th’s Record Store Day (the second RSD of 2020), Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood label released a brand new limited-edition 12inch single by London-based ensemble Maisha, titled Open The Gates.
As a follow-up to both the group’s superb 2018 debut There Is A Place and their recent collaborative Night Dreamer recording with saxophone legend Gary Bartz, this brilliant new 16-minute single is an adventurous and deeply rhythmic spiritual jazz gem that dramatically builds from a simple melody and bassline. On the flip, the record features an incredible live version of the track “Osiris” taken from the band’s final show of 2019, in Lille, France.
Led by drummer Jake Long this live rendition of “Osiris” features the same lineup that appeared on the There Is A Place, which includes keyboardist Amané Suganami, bassist Twm Dylan, percussionist Tim Doyle, guitarist Shirley Tetteh, and saxophonist Nubya Garcia, as well as frequent touring member and pianist Al MacSween. On “Open The Gates,” two of the UK’s most groundbreaking saxophonists in Binker Golding and Tamar Osborn also contribute to the epic recording.
As a nice RSD touch, this 12inch single was manufactured in collaboration with The Vinyl Factory, and pressed using 100% recycled vinyl.
Overall, another impressive release from this London collective, which is quickly making a name as one of the best group’s among this thriving and highly forward-thinking UK jazz scene.
