London pianist Greg Foat teams up with ambient maestro Gigi Masin for cosmic full-length ‘Dolphin’
Highly-acclaimed London composer, producer and pianist Greg Foat returns with his second outstanding record of 2023 (see ‘Off-Piste‘), this time teaming up with Venetian ambient maestro Gigi Masin for a laid back cosmic full-length on the Strut label, titled Dolphin.
Taking the listener on a peaceful sonic journey through eight remarkable tracks, this album fuses together Foat’s analog synths and piano lines with sun-drenched electronica, ambient tones, influences of kosmische, minimalism, and vintage soundtrack scores.
The basis for the compositions originally came from Masin, utilizing an electric piano, sounds from his digital library and an old iPad2. Foat’s superb trio, featuring drummer Moses Boyd and bassist Tom Herbert, then proceeded with a back-and-forth exchange of improvised ideas, all of which was produced by Greg, who sculpted the finished piece.
The impressive oil painting that makes up the album’s cover, also called Dolphin, was done by Greg’s cousin Niul Foat, which provided inspiration for the feel of the record.
Brilliant from start to finish, these two masterful artists have come together to produce a beautiful and calming meditative recording. Highly recommended!
