London bassist Daniel Casimir releases expansive debut ‘Boxed In’ on Jazz re:freshed
London-based composer and bassist Daniel Casimir, who has been making a strong name for himself over the past few years performing alongside some of the most notable artists among the scene like Joe Armon-Jones, Nubya Garcia, Oscar Jerome, Ashley Henry, Binker Golding and others, has just released his debut album as a bandleader, titled Boxed In on the Jazz re:freshed label.
This incredible 11-track recording features Casimir with an expansive large ensemble that includes brass, woodwind, and string units to go along with his superb quintet made up of trumpeter James Copus, tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia, keyboardist Al Macsween, and drummer Moses Boyd. Rising vocalist Ria Moran, who also appeared on Nubiyan Twist’s most recent record, sings on three of the session’s many standout tracks (“New Waters”, “Get Even”, and “Rewind the Time). The album nicely blends together soulful and spiritual jazz grooves with orchestral instrumentation and epic cinematic textures.
Brilliant from start to finish, Boxed In is a really impressive debut from one of the boundary pushing musicians currently making waves among the UK jazz scene and beyond. Definitely one of this year’s best jazz recordings!
