Legendary jazz and soul vocalist Jean Carne returns with new album on Jazz Is Dead
The second wave of collaborative Jazz Is Dead releases from masterminds Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad kicks off with the first album in over 20 years from the great jazz, gospel, and soul vocalist Jean Carne.
Beginning her career in the early 70s with her then-husband, pianist Doug Carn, releasing three groundbreaking spiritual soul-jazz albums on Black Jazz Records, the vocalist went on to perform throughout the decade with Earth, Wind & Fire, Norman Connors, Dexter Wansel, Phyllis Hyman, Lonnie Liston Smith, and others. Throughout that period, Carne also released a number of superb solo releases, most notably for Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, including her 1976 self-titled debut, 1978’s Happy To Be With You and arguably her finest release When I Find You Love in 1979.
Now with the collaborative help of Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and company, she returns with a brilliant new seven-track album that blends together Jazz Is Dead’s signature cosmic jazz-funk analog sound with Jean’s soulful and hypnotic vocals, resulting in what is truly a perfect pairing.
At 74, and with no signs of slowing down, Jean Carne continues to change the game and add another chapter to what has already been a highly-influential and legendary music career.
Jazz Is Dead 12 (JID012) is officially released July 30, 2022 on vinyl. The album is available now digitally.
