Jazzman’s Spiritual Jazz series shifts focus to the deep jazz essentials of ‘NOW!’
For over a decade, London’s Jazzman Records’ incredible Spiritual Jazz compilation series has been unearthing and shedding light on some of most essential deep jazz recordings of the sixties, seventies, and eighties, highlighting different regions of the world and groundbreaking labels like Blue Note Records, Impulse!, Prestige, and SteepleChase. Now with the 13th release of the superb series, focus now shifts to the brilliant modern-day spiritual gems of today.
Released as a 2xLP over two volumes, Spiritual Jazz 13: Now! covers a lot of ground, from more established artists like Makaya McCraven, Shabaka & The Ancestors, Jimi Tenor, Chip Wickham, and Nat Birchall to lesser known, but just as prominent groups/musicians like Black Flower, The Cosmic Range, Vibration Black Finger, Angel Bat Dawid, Menagerie, The Jamie Saft Quartet, and others. The recording, which in all, features music from 15 different countries, also includes modern classics from legends Steve Reid and Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids.
As with all the records in this series, this new compilation is extremely well curated, highlighting the new wave of vibrant jazz artists and groups that continue to pay homage to the spiritual jazz greats like John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and others by pushing the sound forward and making their own mark. An absolute “must-own” for all jazz fans!
