Jazzman’s ‘Spiritual Jazz 9’ explores the deeper side of Blue Note Records
Volume nine of Jazzman’s groundbreaking and critically-acclaimed Spiritual Jazz series dives deep into one of the most celebrated jazz labels, Blue Note Records.
Founded by Alfred Lion in 1939, Blue Note Records was at the forefront of defining jazz recordings during the fifties and sixties. Even though the label has continued to be a leader in the jazz world by constantly redefining itself, Blue Note truly set themselves apart as the definitive jazz leader during the 50s and 60s, releasing numerous groundbreaking recordings like John Coltrane’s Blue Train, Lee Morgan’s Sidewinder, Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage, and countless others.
On Spiritual Jazz 9, label boss Jazzman Gerald compiles some of the most progressive and experimental recordings from the label’s golden era, featuring breakthrough numbers like Eddie Gale’s 1968 spiritual vocal classic “The Rain,” Wayne Shorter’s lesser known “Indian Song,” Bobby Hutcherson’s powerful tribute to John Coltrane, titled “Searchin’ The Trane,” and numerous others.
Similar to Spiritual Jazz 8, this brilliant new compilation is released in two separate double-vinyl parts, and features some of the genres greatest artists of the past century including Hutcherson, Shorter, Joe Henderson, Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean, Duke Pearson, Freddie Hubbard, Andrew Hill, and others.
Overall, Jazzman has done an incredible job of exploring through Blue Note’s vast catalog and curating a multi-part compilation that sheds light on the labels most spiritual sessions. An absolute “must-own” for any jazz fan!
