Jazzman Records highlights overlooked jazz artist Roscoe Weathers on new album
UK label Jazzman Records has recently released a brilliant full-length album highlighting the sixties-era music of long overlooked jazz journeyman and flautist Roscoe Weathers, titled I’ll Remember.
Earning his chops as a sideman in smoky clubs across the country from Memphis to Seattle, the elusive musician finally settled in Los Angeles during the 1960s, where he recorded a significant amount of music, often self-released on 7inch in very limited quantities. Now with this new record, which acts kind of like a retrospective in pulling together a number of different sessions, Weathers music has finally been made more widely available for new generations of listeners.
Weathers can play multiple instruments, however on this incredible 11-track recording he is mostly featured on flute, featuring a wide range of grooves including more laid back beatnik jazz stylings to more uptempo percussion heavy Afro-Latin influenced gems.
Listening through this recording a number of times, it’s truly hard to believe his music was passed over by numerous labels. Thanks to Jazzman Records, hopefully Weathers’ can start to receive the worthy attention and appreciation he truly deserves.
