Sarah Tandy — Infection in the Sentence

Jazz Re:freshed releases brilliant debut from London-based pianist Sarah Tandy

We are only three months into 2019, however the London-based presenter and label Jazz Re:freshed has already had a strong year, releasing three great female-led jazz records. One of those recordings is Sarah Tandy’s six-track debut Infection In The Sentence.

Over the past few years, Tandy has quickly become one of the most in-demand pianists in the London jazz scene. Most recently she has contributed on both of alto saxophonist Camilla George’s two recordings, and Cassie Kinoshi’s incredible SEED Ensemble debut, Driftglass.

On Infection In The Sentence, Tandy is joined by some of the most notable musicians currently making waves within the London scene, including trumpeter and KOKOROKO bandleader Sheila Maurice Grey, who also is part of the Nerija collective and the SEED Ensemble, saxophonist Binker Goldings (Binker and Moses, Zara McFarlane), KOKOROKO and Joe-Armon Jones’ bassist Mutale Chashi, and Ezra Collective drummer Femi Koleoso (who also plays with Nubya Garcia).

Musically, the debut recording is brilliant from start to finish, highlighting Tandy’s diversity as a pianist and composer. Each track has a slightly different feel, fusing together hard bop-influenced melodies and structures, with hints of Afrobeat, dub, and jazz-funk. The record very much captures the ever-shifting sounds currently coming out of London.

Overall, this is truly a remarkable debut, proving that Sarah Tandy is one of the most forward-thinking rising pianists in jazz.
