Irreversible Entanglements — Open The Gates

Irreversible Entanglements continues to push the boundaries on superb third album ‘Open The Gates’

Since the release of their breakthrough self-titled debut in 2017, the adventurous Philadelphia/NY/DC-based quintet has established themselves as one of the most thought-provoking and forward-thinking jazz collectives. The group returns with an incredible new album on International Anthem, titled Open The Gates, that much like their other recordings, cries out for universal social change.

Featuring a superb lineup that includes the powerful vocals of Moor Mother (aka Camae Ayewa), along with saxophonist Keir Neuringer, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, bassist Luke Stewart, and drummer Tcheser Holmes, with many of the members also contributing on synths and additional percussion, this remarkable 70-plus minute 7-track album is arguably the group’s best recording to date. The session features a sonic eruption of free-wheeling horn solos, tranced-out cosmic electronic tones, and explosive drum rhythms, that blend brilliantly with Ayewa’s timely spoken words. From righteous, even danceable-like grooves, to more avant freeform moments, the record takes the listener on an intense exploratory journey through sound and liberation-oriented messages.

Overall, another impressive outing from a highly innovative group that not only continues to push the boundaries, but as the album suggests, bust them wide open.
