Incredible lost Alan Braufman 1975 live NYC radio session released on 3xLP
After being shelved for 47 years, an incredible 1975 live session for New York City’s listener-supported WBAI radio station featuring saxophonist, flautist, and composer Alan Braufman and his superb sextet receives an official release.
Recorded with a live studio audience shortly after the release of Braufman’s groundbreaking “loft jazz” classic Valley Of Search for the India Navigation label, this 94-minute performance, which features live expanded renditions of material from that breakthrough recording. Spread over five album sides on 3xLPs, this music takes the listener on an adventurous sonic journey, from hypnotic and pulsating rhythms, to spiritual meditative grooves and dance-like trances with soaring horn solos and layered percussion.
The session also includes a phenomenal cast of musicians, with Braufman on alto saxophone, flute, and percussion, his longtime collaborator Cooper-Moore on piano, ashimba, percussion, bass legend William Parker, John Clark on French horn, drummer Jim Schapperoew, and percussionist Ralph Williams. This also represented the first time that Parker and Moore performed together, whose musical partnership has flourished ever since.
The well-crafted gatefold release, which includes newly mastered audio, also includes recent liner notes by the host Susan Mannheimer (who you can hear on the recording).
Overall, a brilliant live recording that transforms the listener’s experience as if they were in the room when the music was being performed. Highly recommended!
