Nimbus Sextet — Dreams Fulfilled

Glasgow’s Nimbus Sextet releases impressive debut full-length ‘Dreams Fulfilled’

With so much great music being released these days from all corners of the globe, I find that there are always a number of incredible recordings that are not on my radar and might miss upon their initial release. That is certainly the case with the debut album Dreams Fulfilled from Glasgow’s Nimbus Sextet.

Released back in October, this brilliant six-track recording, which was notably produced by Wayne Dickson and put out by Acid Jazz records, features an superb cast of rising UK-based musicians including bandleader and pianist/ keyboardist Joe Nichols, drummer Alex Palmer, bassist Mischa Stevens, trumpeter Euan Allardice, saxophonist Martin Fell, and guitarist Luca Pisanu. The album covers a lot of ground musically, blending together elements of 70s era jazz-funk, prog-rock grooves, and soulful instrumental R&B-like melodies. It sounds like a combination of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters meets Soft Machine and Snarky Puppy with a UK-Scottish jazz vibe.

Since the albums release, there have also been a couple of great remixes of “Lily White”, including a funky neo-soul reworking by Ghostchant and a club-ready dub rendition by Matthew Herbert.

Overall, a fantastic debut full-length from one of the most notable breakthrough groups currently making waves out of the UK jazz scene. Highly recommended!
