Gilles Peterson & Soul Jazz Records’ Stuart Baker release vol.2 of their incredible ‘Cuba: Music and Revolution’ compilation series
Earlier in the year, Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker teamed up to release an incredible 23-track compilation exploring the fusion of jazz, funk, Brazilian, Tropicalia, and disco with Latin and Salsa that emerged in Cuba in the 1970s and 1980s, titled Cuba: Music And Revolution — Culture Clash In Havana Cuba: Experiments In Latin Music 1975-85. With much more music to dive into from this era, London’s Soul Jazz Records has just released volume 2 of this essential series.
Featuring 22 superb tracks, the music compiled on this new release includes some of the most obscure recordings to ever come out of the region, with selections from legendary Cuban artists such as Los Van Van, Grupo De Experimentación, Farah Maria, Ricardo Eddy Martinez, Juan Pablo Torres, Grupo Sintesis, Orquesta Riverside, and more.
Much like the first volume, the music featured on this 3xLP compilation is also highlighted in the massive 250-page cover art book, also curated by Peterson and Baker, that dives deep into the 30-year period following the Cuban Revolution, titled Cuba: Music and Revolution: Original Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90.
Overall, volume 2 of this brilliantly expansive compilation series picks up right where the first release had us all asking for more, and truly captures this fruitful chapter in Cuban music better than any recording to date.
