GALXTC release incredible new Brit-funk twelve-inch ‘Life Is A Mirror’ on Space Grapes label
With the massive new album from STR4TA and other recent releases from Koji Ono (w/ members of Atmosfear), The Expansions (2018 track “Mariposa” specifically) and others, it feels like their is bit of a Brit-funk revitalization that is brewing. The momentum to take this DIY new-wave-jazz-funk sound, that originated in the UK during the late 70s and early 80s, into the future continues with an incredible new twelve-inch single, titled ‘Life Is A Mirror’, from the French group GALXTC.
This highly-anticipated release quickly started to catch buzz following the single being premiered on Gilles Peterson’s BBC 6 radio show, and then later on his Worldwide.FM Brit-funk Part 2 ’20’ episode. Even though Peterson stated that he knew who was behind the recording, their has been very little that has been revealed about the individual(s) that are behind the project. As with all things, I’m sure that information will be made available in time. The track itself, brilliantly blends together spacey synth melodies, scratch guitar riffs, and a hypnotic vocal chorus with a disco-funk bass and percussion groove. It’s like if Atmosfear and Hi-Tension met up with Liquid Liquid and produced a disco track together.
There have been some inconsistencies with the official release date, even though a number of limited copies were already made available at select record shop sites a couple of weeks ago (all selling out instantly). I believe the record will be more widely available in mid-May, and when it does, do not hesitate to pick-up a copy (I recommend pre-ordering a copy now). This is definitely one of the standout tracks of 2021, and arguably the best twelve-inch release. With this forthcoming release, and the attention that STR4TA’s full-length is getting, it’s really great to see the Brit-funk sound and it’s innovators/history receiving the praise it very much deserves.
