Funk 45: Two Classics From Kashmere Stage Band
Licensed from Now-Again Records, Athens Of The North has just released an incredible new forty-five single featuring two heavy-hitting funk jams from the now legendary seventies-era Houston-based high school group, Kashmere Stage Band.
Led by Kashmere High School music teacher/band director Conrad O. Johnson, this interchangeable group gained national attention during the seventies for winning high school band competitions all over the country. Considered unbeatable by many, the band released eight albums during that same period featuring numerous different members. The group performed a mixture of originals and classic funk/soul/jazz covers like “Shaft,” “Super Bad,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Super Strut,” and “Take Five.”
In 2006, the Los Angeles-based Now-Again Records released the soundtrack to the band’s documentary Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974 featuring many of the group’s greatest songs.
Now for the first time, thanks to Athens Of The North, two of the group’s most notable songs, “Kashmere” and “Scorpio,” have been released on 7” format. Both songs feature KSB’s funky and virtuosic big band sound featuring heavy breaks and large horn-layered grooves, proving once again that age is just a number.
Another great release celebrating what is not only one of the greatest high school bands, but one of the most accomplished funk groups ever.
