This week’s ‘Funk 45’ selection is one of my favorite releases from the Edinburgh-based label Athens Of The North, titled Get It On by the short-lived Minnesota-based band Prophets of Peace. Even though the song “Get It On” was recorded in 1975, the track wasn’t officially released until 2013 when the Chicago-based label Numero Group discovered the soul-funk gem prior to putting together their brilliant Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis Sound compilation. Following the release of Purple Snow, Numero Group agreed to license both “Get It On” and another unreleased cut “You Can Be” to Athens Of The North, who in turn, put the tracks out on a limited-edition 45rpm single. Overall, a great and much-needed release uncovering two deep cuts from with the seventies’ Minnesota funk scene.
