Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jimi Tenor releases funky new single ‘Sugar And Spice’
Finnish multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Jimi Tenor returns following the release of the his outstanding 2018 full-length Order of Nothingness and last year’s single Vocalize My Luv, with a great new 7inch single on Max Weissenfeldt’s Berlin-based Philophon label, titled Sugar And Spice.
This represents the first single from his forthcoming album Aulos, which will be released in October. Similar to many of Tenor’s other recordings, Sugar And Spice draws from many different influences and genres, combining a mixture of Afrobeat and Ethio-jazz grooves, with layered horns, boogie-inspired synths, and soulful vocals. The track also features Ghanaian rhythm genius Ekow Alabi, who was also featured on Order of Nothingness.
The b-side features a fifties/sixties-era Sun Ra-inspired jazz-funk instrumental, using singing organ and horn melodies over a funky repetitive African-influenced percussion rhythm. The track definitely has an overall lo-fi cosmic vibe throughout.
In all, this is a brilliant new single that should stir some excitement for the upcoming full-length release later this fall.
