Erlon Chaves’ 1971 Brazilian Holy-Grail ‘Procura-se uma Virgem’ Reissued
This past year, the Portuguese-based Mad About Records label released a much welcomed reissue of Erlon Chaves and Orquestra Saint Moritz’ highly obscure 1971 soundtrack to the Brazilian soft porn movie Procura-se Uma Virgem.
Declared “one of the true holy grails of brazil” by Gilles Peterson, the 10-track record is a nice mixture of funky organ instrumentation, erotic lounge grooves, modal jazz, and heavy percussion breaks. Arranged and conducted by the highly accomplished São Paulo-born orchestra leader and pianist, Procura-se Uma Virgem also incorporates elements of samba and bossa nova.
The first pressing of the reissue was limited to only 500 copies, and sold out quickly. Luckily, it seems like a second pressing has recently made it’s way into shops. With the 1971 original going for upwards of about $1000 (and that’s if you can even find it), I expect the second pressing of the reissue to sellout very quickly. I think it’s safe to say that you definitely do not want to pass on the opportunity to pick-up a copy of this rare masterpiece.
