Caixa Cubo — Angela

Eagerly awaited album ‘Angela’ by São Paulo jazz-funk trio Caixa Cubo gets vinyl release

Following a digital release of last September, the seventh album from highly talented São Paulo jazz-funk trio Caixa Cubo, titled Angela, sees an eagerly-awaited vinyl release through the London-based label Heavenly Recordings.

This seven-track brilliant recording, featuring keyboardist Henrique Gomide, bassist Noa Stroeter, and drummer João Fideles, nicely captures the spirit of the adventurous and exploratory Brazilian jazz fusion sound of the seventies while still looking forward. The music nicely blends samba influenced rhythms with jazz-funk grooves, and spacey cosmic melodies. The session also features a few covers, including a funked-up jazz dance rendition of Egbert Gismonti’s “Baiao Malandro”, and superb version of the track “Dark Prince” by the late great composer and pianist Geri Allen. Arguably the album’s most standout moment is on “Palavras”, which features guest vocals by Zé Leônidas and is reminiscent of Milton Nascimento and the best of Brazil’s melodic and harmonic traditions.

Overall, a masterful recording from one of Brazil’s best modern-day jazz-funk groups. With a limited pressing of just 300 copies, I expect this recording to sellout quickly. Fans of Azymuth, Marcos Resende, and Manfredo Fest should definitely check out this recording. Highly recommended!
