Drummer Tommaso Cappellato teams up with Italian break dance collective Pavimento Fertile
Highly active Los Angeles-based Italian-rooted drummer and composer Tommaso Cappellato, who also runs the impressive Domanda Music label, has teamed up with Italian break dance collective Pavimento Fertile for a dance-oriented cosmic soul recording, titled Dancing Around Fire.
This unique collaboration between dancer and musician was born out of Cappellato’s live performance at the Pavimento Fertile dance jam in 2021. Seeing how Cappellato’s rhythms brought out new layers in the dancers’ movements inspired the collective’s founder Paolo “Frigo” Montesi to commission an album with a focus of fueling freestyle dance sessions through drum breaks and sampling.
This superb 7-track album takes listeners straight to the dancefloor, fusing together breakbeat drum percussion, jazz-funk, Afrofuturistic soul, spacey keys, and out-of-this world cosmic instrumental grooves.
Recorded in just 7 days in Los Angeles, Cappellato is joined on the session by singer Lalin St. Juste (also of The Seshen), King Pari founders DJ Stepmom and Cameron Kinghorn, saxophonist Michael Blake, and bass player Andrea Lombardini.
Overall, Dancing Around Fire is a brilliant dancefloor-focused recording, a strong foundational debut for Montesi’s Pavimento Fertile label, and the perfect soundtrack for those forthcoming warm summertime festival DJ sets. Let’s move!
