Don Rendell’s Essential Jazz Groover ‘Space Walk’ Reissued
Originally released in 1972, Don Rendell Quintet’s Space Walk was one of the final sessions released on Columbia UK’s legendary “Landsdowne Series.” This essential recording features an extension the signature sound that iconic British saxophonist developed as part of the highly accomplished Don Rendell – Ian Carr Quintet during the mid-to-late sixties. Featuring vibes, flute, soprano and tenor saxophone, and a tight rhythm section, the session mixes together modal jazz and post-bop with soulful melodies, spacey vibes, and funky grooves. The album’s overall sound is very reminiscent of some of the finest seventies-era recordings from the MPS label.
Supporting Rendell on this record is Trevor Tomkins on drums, fellow British saxophonist and flautist Stan Robinson, Peter Shade on vibes, and Australian bassist Jack Thorncroft.
Like many albums in the the Lansdowne Series, Rendell’s Space Walk is an essential recording that helped form the foundation to progressive modern jazz in Britain during the 1970s.
Licensed directly from the Don Rendell estate, a small label out of Italy has just been made this record available again for the first time, and with the original going for around $400-$500, this reissue is very much welcomed. Absolutely essential for every jazz fan!
