Devin Brahja Waldman’s Gnawa-jazz Krautrock project Kadef releases debut on RR Gems
New York-based multi-instrumentalist Devin Brahja Waldman, known for his work under BRAHJA, teamed up with an eclectic group of musicians, including vocalist Ziad Qoulaii, for a new experimental recording under the name KADEF.
Released through the fantastic Estonian label RR Gems, the group’s brilliant and adventurous debut album fuses together spiritual jazz, psychedelic grooves, Krautrock, and Gnawa music. The session features nine musicians, including a number of artists playing Moroccan-rooted instruments like guembri, qraqeb, oud mixed with more traditional jazz instrumentation, keys, saxophones, guitars, and more to create a unique east-meets-west sound.
The name of the project KADEF, comes from the abbreviations of Karma, Agape (meaning Love), Discernment (to disentangle truth from deception), Enactment(to heal and evolve) and Freedom, which act as core values for the project and sound.
Overall, a superb recording from start to finish that get’s even better with each and every listen. Limited to just 1,000 vinyl copies, this is one you’ll want to snatch up quickly!
