Chicago jazz collective Resavoir release groove-oriented debut on International Anthem
Led by producer and arranger Will Miller, the expansive Chicago-based jazz collective Resavoir release their brilliantly crafted debut album on International Anthem.
Written and recorded mostly at Miller’s apartment, this well-written 29-minute nine-track recording features eighteen musicians, and fuses together jazz instrumentation, minimal classically-inspired orchestrations, layered atmospheric textures, and funky rhythmic grooves.
The music came together by Miller creating outline sketches of the tracks through samples and looping beats, and then bringing them forward to the collective for further development. From there, Miller brought in a number of notable special guests, including harpist Brandee Younger and saxophonist/ vocalist Sen Morimoto, to over-dub additional instrumentation. The results are truly remarkable, as this album takes the listener on a sonic journey, featuring heavy multi-layered melodies, epic orchestrations, and instrumental grooves.
Overall, this is an impressive debut from Resavoir, an album that should be near the top of most year-end “best of” lists.
Fans of Makaya McCraven, Yesterday’s New Quintet, David Axelrod, and Greg Foat should definitely check out this record!
