Daniel Villarreal — Lados B

Chicago drummer Daniel Villarreal teams up with Jeff Parker and Anna Butterss on rhythmic ‘Lados B’

Chicago-based drummer Daniel Villarreal follows up last year’s breakthrough solo debut Panamá 77 with a superb new album on International Anthem, featuring guitarist Jeff Parker and bassist Anna Butterss, titled Lados B.

Daniel Villarreal — Lados B

Recorded during a stretch of two afternoons in the backyard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles on October 15th and 16th, 2020, these sessions represent the first in-person recordings theses musicians participated in since the pandemic locked the world down just seven months prior. Some of the material from the session also found its way on the Panamá 77 record.

Featuring nine highly improvisational tracks, this impressive recording blends Villarreal’s highly rhythmic and Latin-influenced percussion grooves with Parker and Butterss’ freeform improvisations, that go everywhere from psychedelic and cosmic excursions to intricate folk-like melodies. Special guest Neal Francis also joins in on Rhodes piano on the standout track “Salute”. This is definitely one of those albums that gets better with each and every listen.

Overall, a really fantastic improvisational session from three of today’s most creative musicians on the scene. Highly recommended!
