We return to BeatCaffeine’s Weekly Record Rundown, featuring some highly recommended new music recordings that have been recently released. This week includes the latest from cosmic keyboardist Greg Foat, the debut from French duo Bolbec, South African pianist Bokani Dyer’s new remix 12″ on Brownswood, and the return of prolific New Zealand-based producer and saxophonist Nathan Haines.
Italian producer, singer, vinyl collector, DJ and music producer Mistura Pura (aka Federica Grappasonni), who’s put out a number of superb singles over the last couple of years (see ‘Vamo Vive’ 7″), has just released a couple new tracks digitally in anticipation of her forthcoming full-length album on Ubiquity Records in early 2025.
Manchester-based multi-instrumentalist Nat Birchall, who’s mostly made a name for himself as a saxophonist among the UK jazz scene, continues his explorations into the sounds of Jamaica with another superb instrumental roots reggae-influence album, titled Dimension of the Drums.
Drummer, composer, and producer Emanative (aka Nick Woodmansey), who has been at the forefront of the emerging UK jazz scene, has just released an incredible new spiritual jazz recording, titled Abstract Intuition.
UK broken beat legend and producer IG Culture returns with his groundbreaking cosmic jazz project Likwid Continual Space Motion (aka LCSM) to release the 18-track full-length album, titled The Remedy, which brilliantly connect the many fabrics of London’s Underground dance music scene.
The Leeds-based label ATA Records has recently released a great new soulful Afrobeat 12inch single “Feel It For Yourself” from the United Disco Organisation, which is led by bassist Neil Innes of the UK group The Sorcerers, along with Joost Hendrickx (also of The Sorcerers), guitarist Chris Dawkins, and percussionist Danny Templeman.
The latest release from Paul Murphy’s Jazz Room Records features a superb jazz-funk 7inch single from Aflex Combo, which a project led by Japanese producer and multi-instrumentalist Keisuke Yamazoe.
New Zealand-based saxophonist, composer and bandleader Lucien Johnson, who notably led Shogun Orchestra and collaborated with Lord Echo and the Black Seeds, returns with his first album in four years, a brilliant self-released full-length, titled Ancient Relics.
As we move into the middle of summer, we see a slew of standout new releases, including a collection of Joaquin Joe Claussell remixes featuring selections from Nicola Conte’s 2023 full-length Umoja, the brilliant debut from UK producer and multi-instrumentalist David Lyn, the latest Best of Various 12inch from Steve Conry’s Ten Lovers Music, and the fourth and arguably best recording from K15 and Culross Close. Innovative German guitarist JJ Whitefield, who was a founding member of the pioneering acid jazz group Poets Of Rhythm and later, the The Whitefield Brothers, has been a musical explorer over the past few decades, from his experimental Afro-funk project under the alias Karl Hector to his Kraut-rock and ambient recordings via his Rodinia alter-ego, collaborations with legendary Montenegrin-French composer Janko Nilovic and more. For his first release with London’s Jazzman Records, Whitefield dives into the world of spiritual jazz with a new album titled, The Infinity of Nothingness.
