Happy New Year! We’ve made it to the final day of 2024. For what will probably be the final BeatCaffeine “best of” list of the year, we dive into some of our favorite tracks over the past twelve months. This one definitely gets the reward for most difficult list to put together out of the bunch. Even though this list stops at 40, this could have easily been a top 100 given how great some of the music was this year.
As we wind down the final days of 2024, we take a look back at some of the essential compilation releases over the past 12 months. From tropical grooves to jazz dance, spiritual, cosmic and obscure selections from around the globe, these well-crafted records helped shine a much-needed light on some incredible gems from many under-the-radar talented artists and musicians.
As we complete another trip around the sun, it’s that time again to start to look back on some of the best releases of 2024. Similar to previous years, we will start with the best new albums and follow it up with a deep dive into some of the standout reissues, compilations, singles, tracks and more.
This week’s BeatCaffeine Weekly Record Rundown features the latest brilliant release from London-based cosmic composer and keyboardist Greg Foat, the highly anticipated new album from São Paulo trio Caixa Cubo on Far Out Recordings, Soundway’s latest compilation diving into the exploratory sounds of Nigeria, and a memorable live session from Jeff Parker and his ETA IVtet on International Anthem.
UK-based producer, DJ, and musician, Lascelle ‘Lascelles’ Gordon, who was a founding member of legendary acid-jazz group The Brand New Heavies and a pioneering DJ at the legendary 1990s Wag Club, returns with his latest offering from his adventurous project Vibration Black Finger, titled Everybody Cryin’ Mercy.
Similar to last year’s Colin Curtis Presents: Indigo Jam Unit EP, which was a single artist focused compilation, Paul Murphy and his superb Jazz Room Records label is highlighting the Japanese jazz ensemble Copa Salvo with a new release featuring arguably some of the group’s best material taken from their three albums.
This week’s BeatCaffeine Record Rundown includes the return of Sheila Maurice-Grey’s acclaimed London collective KOKOROKO with their highly-anticipated new EP, a full-length debut from Japanese electronic-meets-jazz duo Cruisic, Italian producer and keyboard wiz Stefano De Santis latest offering, and the long-awaited return of Marc Mac’s groundbreaking Visioneers project.
New York-based keyboardist, vocalist and Alice Coltrane disciple Surya Botofasina, who was a major contributor on André 3000’s groundbreaking New Blue Sun recording, follows up his breakthrough debut Everyone’s Children with a brilliant new album on the superb London label Spiritmuse Records, titled Ashram Sun.
Beginning with the release of Les Hommes breakthrough debut album in 2000 on Schema Records, titled The Mood is Modal, the East London trio has continued to receive much acclaim through a number of follow-up recordings. In much-anticipation, the group releases their first full-length since 2017, titled Sì, così on Sudded Hunger Records.
