Brownswood releases stellar debut from South-London virtuoso pianist DoomCannon
South London-based composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and virtuosic pianist DoomCannon, who first jumped onto the scene with the group Triforce (featured on the We Out Here compilation and Jazz Re:freshed release TriForce 5ive EP), has recently released his much-anticipated debut album, titled Renaissance, on Gilles Peterson’s label Brownswood Recordings.
Charting a new path musically now as a solo artist, DoomCannon’s debut nine-track recording is inspired by an accumulation of experiences over the past four years, including the Black Lives Matter movement in the summer of 2020 and the ongoing global pandemic with a look towards a much brighter future. This conceptual undertaking features dense layers of piano and keyboard melodies, saxophone and guitar solos, Dilla-like drum rhythms, epic string arrangements, and cosmic textures that often culminates into a climatic sonic journey.
On this session, DoomCannon plays acoustic piano, synths, handles string arrangements and incorporates his own vocals. He is also back by an incredible expanded cast of UK musicians, including saxophonist Kaidi Akinnibi, guitarist Daniel Rogerson, bassist Jamien Nagadhana, double bassist Thea Sayer, cellist Wayne Uquhart, violist Natalia Senior-Brown, violinist Marsha Skinns and Saskia Horton, drummer Oscar Ogden, and vocalist Sienna Hamilton, with Emmanuel Ayeni taking care of the vocal arrangements.
Overall, this is an outstanding and thought-provoking debut from one of UK’s most notable rising young talents. Fans of Kamasi Washington, Ashley Henry, Binker and Moses, and Theo Croker should definitely check this album out.
