Mr Bongo Record Club Volume Four

Brighton-based label & record shop, Mr Bongo release Vol. 4 of ‘Record Club’ compilation

In what has been truly an incredible compilation series over the past few years, the good people at the Brighton-based label and record shop have put out the fourth volume of their extremely well-curated and highly-acclaimed Mr Bongo Record Club.

Similar to the other recordings in the series, this new fifteen-track two-LP release features a wide range of music from all corners of the globe, including Mr Bongo staff favorites and some of the most obscure Brazilian, African, soul, funk, and disco gems. One slight departure on this release is that the compilation also includes a few contemporary tracks from artists like Matthew Tavares (of BADBADNOTGOOD), Wax Machine, and DJ Format & The Simonsound, all of which were originally featured on either limited private press vinyl releases or were previously only available digitally. The reason behind adding these newer tracks was to hopefully help provide some much deserved exposure of this music to wider audiences.

Some of the other highlights include a Kenny Dope mix of James Reese & The Progressions‘ soulful gem “Throwing Stones”, Azwon‘s jazz-funk boogie groover ‘Paradise Island’, the sped up version of Zé Roberto‘s 1973 Brazilian holy grail “Lotus 72 D”, The Mombasa Vikings‘ killer Afro-funk cut “Mama Matotoya”, and Hamlet Minassian‘s Armenian disco take on the Italo classic “Margherita” to name just a few.

Similar to the other volumes, this recording is absolutely brilliant from start to finish, and continues to be an incredible platform in unearthing many forgotten and lost rarities. At this point, it’s probably safe to say that this is one of the best active compilation series in general — Highly recommended!
