Brainfeeder releases 2011 cosmic jazz classic from Austin Peralta on vinyl
After 13 years since its initial CD/Digital-only release in 2011, Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label is releasing for the first time on vinyl, the late great Austin Peralta’s cosmic jazz classic Endless Planets. This record was the label’s first dive into jazz, helping set the stage for artists like Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kneedelus, and others.
At the time of the original release, Peralta was a rising young phenom among the Los Angeles jazz scene. Unfortunately by the time that many people globally had realized the genius of the Los Angeles-based pianist and composer, he had already sadly passed at the young age of 22, which was just nine months after Endless Planets was released.
This timeless recording, which is released here as a special deluxe version, features acoustic jazz improvisation and virtuosity at the highest level, while infusing elements of electronics and sonic atmospheric textures that flow brilliantly from start to finish. The record also includes a superb lineup, including the late Zane Musa (alto saxophone), Ben Wendel (tenor and soprano saxophone), Hamilton Price (bass) and Zach Harmon (drums). Austin’s longtime friend and associate Strangeloop also assisted with electronic manipulation throughout the set, along with The Cinematic Orchestra and singer Heidi Vogel collaborating on the album’s final piece “Epilogue: Renaissance Bubbles.”
If making this recording available on vinyl wasn’t enough, this deluxe version features four previously unreleased live tracks recorded at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios in London in July 2011, including a version of “DMT Song” from Flying Lotus’ 2012 album Until the Quiet Comes that Austin co-wrote. This equally impressive session featured an all-star British band comprising of Richard Spaven (drums), Tom Mason (bass), Jason Yarde (alto saxophone), Heidi Vogel (vocals), and Jason Swinscoe of The Cinematic Orchestra (electronics).
This is one of those albums that will forever stand the test of time, sounding as fresh and current as anything that’s coming out today and probably years to come. Ranking #2 on BeatCaffeine’s ‘Favorite Jazz Albums of 2010’, it’s great to see this momentous recording finally receive a special vinyl release. Long live the spirit and influence of Austin Peralta!
