BeatCaffeine’s Weekly Record Rundown Sep 5, 2025

For this week’s BeatCaffeine Record Rundown (it was a massive week for new music!), we highlight new full-length albums from both saxophonist and flautist Chip Wickham and keyboardist and producer Yoni Mayraz, along with the latest EP from UK-based The Earthsouls on Colin Curtis Presents, and the must-own 7inch by Orchestra Mambo International on Echo Chamber Recordings.

Chip Wickham — The Eternal Now

Chip Wickham — ‘The Eternal Now’
(Gondwana Records)

Fresh off his recent collaborative release with The Lewis Express (Doo-Ha!), saxophonist, flautist and composer Chip Wickham returns with his latest full-length for Gondwana Records, titled The Eternal Now. This brilliant 9-track album is Wickham’s most rhythm heavy offering, exploring groove-oriented spiritual and modal jazz with a forward-thinking approach. An impressive cast of musicians joins Wickham on the session, including legendary drummer Luke Flowers of The Cinematic Orchestra, acclaimed bassist Simon ‘Sneaky’ Houghton, jazz dance pioneer Snowboy on percussion and more. Great from start to finish, this is arguably Wickham’s best album to date and he continues to not only make his mark throughout Europe, but is quickly becoming one of the most visionary artist across the globe.

(PPK Records)

As a follow-up to his 2023 breakthrough album, Dybbuk Tse!, London-based keyboardist and producer Yoni Mayraz returns with a superb new full-length on New York’s PPK Records (run by Pino Palladino & David Passick), titled Dogs Bark Babies Cry. Recorded at the legendary Konk Studios in North London using analog and vintage gear, the session was captured live, with different guest artists joining across the session including Fly Anakin, Tenderlonious, Miriam Adefris, JSPHYNX and Callum Connell. The 17-track recording brilliantly blends together 70s inspired cosmic jazz-funk with Middle Eastern textures, broken beat and hip-hop percussion grooves, and cinematic electronic soundscapes. With another impressive release, Yoni Mayraz has rapidly emerged as one of the most innovative artists on the UK jazz scene.
