BeatCaffeine’s Weekly Record Rundown March 6, 2026
This week’s BeatCaffeine Record Rundown highlights the brilliant new spiritual jazz album from Tony Burkill’s Work Money Death, a remix release from Italian bassist Rosa Brunello, the Jonny Liebeck Group’s cosmic 7-inch single on Terrasolare, and the celebratory Frisson EP Part 1 on Steve Conry’s superb Ten Lovers Music label.

Work Money Death — ‘A Portal to Here’
(ATA Records)
One of BeatCaffeine’s favorite ensembles, Work Money Death, led by saxophonist Tony Burkill, returns with a brilliant new album, A Portal to Here on ATA Records. This four-track 2xLP finds the UK ensemble continuing to explore the depths of 60s-inspired spiritual jazz, channelling pioneers like Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in their first recording since guitarist Chris “Earl” Dawkins’ passing. Here, the group frames grief as revelation, from the Baptist church fire of “Dance of the Spirits” to the open-hearted devotion of “Brother Earl,” transcending whatever life brings. Undoubtedly one of the best releases of the year!

Rosa Brunello — ‘Reworks’
(Domanda Music)
Italian bassist, composer, and producer Rosa Brunello, revisits standout moments from her acclaimed albums Sounds Like Freedom and Senseless Acts of Love on a new remix album, titled Reworks on Tommaso Cappellato’s Domanda Music. The five-track recording dives deeper into Brunello’s cosmic, bass-forward fusion of spiritual jazz, dub, and leftfield club music, magnifying her sound’s warmth and low-end weight. The EP stretches her melodies into echo-drenched, psychedelic spaces, where pulsing 4/4 grooves, tribal drums, and dubbed-out textures turn the original tracks into hypnotic, slow-burning journeys. It feels equally tuned for listening and hazy, late-night dancefloors.

Jonny Liebeck Group — ‘Sunset Islands / Sunrise Islands’ 7″
(Terrasolare)
The Jonny Liebeck Group delivers deep cosmic grooves on their latest 7-inch single for London-based label Terrasolare. The session features Jonny Liebeck (keyboards/synths), Tom Mason (electric bass), Andrew McLean (drums), and Santiago Morales (congas). The A-side, “Sunset Islands,” is a breezy, Rhodes-soaked jazz-funk burner, while the flip, “Sunrise Islands,” is a lush, cinematic reinterpretation of Piero Piccioni’s “Isole del Tramonto,” perfect for late-night spins.

Various — ‘Frisson EP Part 1‘
(Ten Lovers Music)
Steve Conry’s superb label, Ten Lovers Music, celebrates its 30th anniversary with Frisson EP Part 1, a brilliant release steeped in jazz-inflected house and live instrumentation. Sound Signals’ “Rhythms & Sounds,” featuring flautist Han Litz, sets the tone with crisp drums and agile flute over supple bass. Future Jazz Ensemble’s “Don’t Be Afraid” follows with rich keys and an easy swing, before Mike Perras’ “Sweet One” pits flute and sax in spirited dialogue atop a tight rhythm section. Stefano De Santis closes the record with “Simple Things,” a restrained, jazz dancefloor groover whose warm chords and fluid low-end perfectly capture the EP’s concept of frisson.
