Finnish saxophonist and composer Markus Holkko has released a brilliant new album on Jazzaggression, titled Eye of The Universe. Joining Holkko, the session includes Juuso Rinta on double bass, Samuli Rautianen on electric piano and analog synths, Teemu Mustonen on drums/ percussion, and contributions from Teemu Åkerblom, who plays both electric guitar effects and sitar. SML — Small Medium Large

SML — ‘Small Medium Large’
(International Anthem)

SML is made up of some of today’s most forward-thinking improvisors, including bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann. Recorded over two separate two-night stands at the beloved (but unfortunately now closed) Highland Park, Los Angeles venue ETA, this superb 13-track recording was engineered and recorded in stereo direct to Nagra by Bryce Gonzales and compiled, arranged, and edited with additional production, recording, and studio composition by SML across their various home studios. Featuring a heavy-dose of circulatory grooves and experimental textural anomalies, this album captures a group of highly talented boundary-pushing artists at their creative height.
