It’s 2026, however before turning attention to the new year, here is one final “best of” list for 2025, highlighting some of the standout compilations that came out over the past twelve months. From funky deep jazz and spiritual grooves to obscure global selections, these well-crafted releases illuminated incredible gems in a carefully curated format.
As I’ve stated before, when it comes to releasing a record, there might not be a more challenging venture than compiling music for a compilation. Unlike a Spotify playlist, these projects demand sourcing and licensing music—a process far more time- and energy-intensive than selecting digital tracks. Compilations continue to play a vital role in narrating stories about eras, regions, niche subgenres, legendary clubs, artists, or DJs, often encompassing multiple elements. They also serve as musical “gateway drugs,” introducing listeners to vast worlds of lesser-known sounds for ongoing exploration.
As always, shoutout to all the labels and people involved in seeing these compilations to the finish line. It’s a ton of work, however is an important musical vehicle of discover for so many!

DJ and crate-digger miche and UK label/record shop Mr Bongo return with With Love: Volume 3, the latest chapter in his celebrated compilation series of soulful groove-oriented obscurities. This 16-track gem dives deeper into global rarities—jazz-funk gliders like Late Nite Music Band’s “Sundance,” Turkish-Brazilian fusion from Nükhet Ruacan’s “Gölge,” samba-funk via Carlos Bivar, and heart-melting modern soul from John Simmons and Spectrym. An eclectic dancefloor-ready soundtrack for the open-eared explorers that liked to dive deeper.

09. Various — ‘Gilles Peterson Presents: International Anthem’

Over the past two decades, International Anthem has arguably led the charge as the most visionary label for jazz and experimental improvised music. On this year’s Record Store Day, legendary DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson assembled a stellar 29-track, 2xLP compilation, drawing from cuts he’s spun on BBC 6 Music and Worldwide FM to honor their enduring partnership. Capping the release, a previously unreleased live track from Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Frank Rosaly—captured on Peterson’s Worldwide FM—infuses fresh energy, bridging radio legacy with cutting-edge artistry in one essential collection.

Following his acclaimed Viagem series on Brazil’s lost bossa nova and samba jazz, nu jazz pioneer Nicola Conte turns homeward with his latest compilation, Viaggio. Featuring Amedeo Tommasi, Alessandro Alessandroni, and others blending synth innovation with jazz-funk, Brazilian rhythms, and Middle Eastern scales, it highlights some of the most interesting and forward-thinking music from the region during the genre’s golden era.

For over two decades, London’s Jazzman Records has championed deep, esoteric sounds through its acclaimed Spiritual Jazz series, celebrating the untold stories of global jazz from the 1960s to the 1980s. The latest chapter, Spiritual Jazz 18: Behind the Iron Curtain, uncovers a hidden world of Cold War-era jazz from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Spanning 1962–1988 and released in two volumes, its 29 rare recordings highlights the creativity and resilience of musicians who navigated censorship and limited resources to produce innovative works.

Showcasing seven superb tracks, the compilation highlights the label’s distinctive blend of jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and avant-garde influences, including powerful jazz dancefloor cuts from Monika Linges Quartet, John Thomas & Lifeforce, Maria Joao Quintet, and Hipsters In The Zone.

03. Various — ‘Timeless Jazz Classics Vol.02‘

As a follow-up to last year’s Record Store Day vinyl reissue of the 2015 CD-only Timeless Jazz Classics compilation, Gilles Peterson presents Volume Two, again spotlighting the celebrated Netherlands-based label. The set features Louis Hayes, Machito and His Salsa Big Band, Mike Nock Quartet, George Adams–Don Pullen Quartet, plus a previously unreleased 1978 live version of “Morning Song” by Eric Kloss & Barry Miles and bonus cut “La Pacita” by the Marion Brown Quartet, pressed on translucent blue vinyl.

Legendary UK DJ, producer, and acid jazz pioneer Chris Bangs celebrates the jazz dancefloor on his Ace Records compilation, The Playbox. Centered on 70s-style jazz-funk and jazz dance, it spans dancefloor staples by Johnny Hammond, Pleasure, and Johnny Lytle, alongside Latin and Brazilian gems from Bill Summers, Cal Tjader, and Dom Um Romao. With standout cuts like Roy Haynes’ “Quiet Fire” and Flora Purim’s “Vera Cruz,” it plays beautifully straight through.
