Over the past couple of months, Matasuna Records has put out two incredible 7inch singles featuring highly sought-after Latin funk jams from the early seventies.
It’s a new year, and that means there are a whole batch of great new releases getting ready to drop. It’s hard to know musically what 2019 has fully in store, however here are some of the most anticipated records I’m looking forward to early in the year.
I’m excited to announce a new monthly jazz-focused night, titled SPACE at the brand new Soul Provisions lounge in uptown Oakland. Each month, I will be spinning some of my favorite jazz records, and I will be joined by guest DJs, live jazz acts, and on occasion, vinyl vendors.
Following releases from saxophonist Nubya Garcia and pianist Ashley Henry, the latest in the Jazz Re:Freshed 5ive EP series comes the debut from rising star trombonist and producer Rosie Turton.
The first ‘Funk 45’ selection of 2019, is the extremely rare seventies soulful funk recording “Easy Greasy” by the little known group Gentle.
On Friday, January 4th, I spun a one-hour live streamed deejay set on Fault Radio at Paradise Records in Oakland. Fault Radio is an East Bay-based weekly online radio featuring both emerging local artists and businesses in the Bay Area.
London-based keyboardist Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu) follows up his excellent 2018 album, The Return, with a great new twelve-inch single.
One of my favorite twelves released over the past month comes from a collaborative effort from some of the UK’s most forward-thinking musicians in drummer Yussef Dayes teaming up with keyboardist Alfa Mist, guitarist Mansur Brown, and bassist Rocco Palladino.
I know, I know … it’s 2019, and it’s time to start looking ahead to the new year. Before I do that, I need to get one final “Best of 2018” list out there. With so many great compilations this year, it would basically be criminal to not include this releases in any year-end recap.
Out of all the “Best of” lists I’ve put together, this listing of my 30 favorite tracks of 2018 might have been the most difficult to compile. In my opinion, you can probably randomize the list and you would have a decent argument for that order.
It seems like each year, there are many great rare recordings that get reissued for the first time, providing an opportunity for collectors and music fans of all generations an opportunity to enjoy music that was previously extremely hard-to-find.
This was a remarkable year for EP releases, more so than what I can recall from past years. Leading the way were a number of rising artists that are just beginning to make their mark on the international stage.
2018 was an incredible year for music, with many groundbreaking albums, EPs, compilations, and worthy reissues.
