Afro7 releases 45rpm single featuring one of Uganda’s most popular bands, The Cranes
The latest single from the Finland-based Afro7 record label features two soulful Afro-funk tracks from The Cranes, which was one of Uganda’s most popular bands in the 1970s.
Both tracks featured on the seven-inch single, “What’s love” and “Joy,” are originally from the group’s 1974 extremely rare full-length album Top Ten Hits. Due to the tragic murder of their bassist Jessy Kasirivu over President Idi Amin’s amorous association with his girlfriend prior to recording the album, and members of the band eventually fleeing to Kenya, this record represents the group’s only full-length album under The Cranes alias. Written both by singer and guitarist Tony Senkebejje, “What’s Love” describes how confusing love can be and was also partly inspired by Kasirivu’s death, and on the flip “Joy” is a love song for Senkebejje’s wife Rachel. Both songs are also prominently featured in the powerful documentary Bwana Jogoo: the ballad of Jessy Gitta, which takes a deeper look into the wrongful death of Jessy Kasisirvu.
Overall, a brilliant forty-five release featuring two incredible Afro-funk gems primed perfectly for warm summertime dance floors.
