Adventurous London ensemble Ill Considered return with superb new lineup on latest LP ‘Luminal Space’
Over the last few years, Ill Considered has been one of the most active and musically adventurous ensembles to have emerged out of the London jazz scene. For their first fully produced studio album on the New Soil label, and their 11th full-length to date (9 self-released from 2017-2019), titled Luminal Space, the group continues to take their sound to new heights in what is arguably their best record to date.
Featuring a new core line-up of saxophonist Idris Rahman, bassist Liran Donin, and drummer Emre Ramazanoglu, along with an impressive cast of special guests in Collocutor’s Tamar Osborn, Steam Down saxophonist Ahnanse, Sons of Kemet tuba player Theon Cross and percussionist Sarathy Korwar, the brilliant session is a mixture of explosive improvisation, pulsating percussion rhythms, and spiritual jazz grooves.
Incredible from start to finish, this is not only one of the best jazz recordings of 2021, but a modern-day masterpiece that will hopefully be celebrated for years to come. Even though the album just came out today digitally, it will unfortunately not see a vinyl release until March 2022. Given how quickly Ill Considered records usually fly off the shelves, I certainly wouldn’t wait and pre-order a copy today. Highly recommended!
